HORNS UP: ATHLETIC CONTRIBUTIONS TO FARGO’S GROWTH

By John Hughes

There’s no doubt Fargo is growing quickly, and with the projected population increase – 42.7 percent by 2045 – the Fargo-Moorhead metro area is already well on its way to a population of 340,000 people. But who we look to for an explanation isn’t so much of a ‘who,’ but a ‘what.’

From Florida to California, the North Dakota State athletic program has been attracting new, up-and-coming athletes. Each year, the athletic department is flooded with hundreds of athletes from a multitude of different backgrounds.

Kelli Layman, Associate Director of NDSU Athletic Academics, is one of the many advisors these new student athletes receive help from when committing to NDSU’s athletic program. With more than 400 majors at NDSU, athletes have a large list of career possibilities.

Enticing a broad array of participants, the program attracts promising athletes from local high schools and makes them want to permanently become part of the Fargo community, says Layman.

With players such as Carson Wentz coming through NDSU, successful athletes are frequently seen around the FM area in local commercials such as the Ford spot in which Wentz was recently featured.

Coming back to Fargo isn’t a new trend. Athletes included, all sorts of professionals have returned to the area after venturing into the world. While outsiders may not understand, the attraction of familiar faces, kind people and, of course, their beloved Bison cast a powerful spell.

Between the success of North Dakota State’s athletic program, the proven tendencies for Fargo’s fledglings to return home, and the area’s population projection, athletes, planners and university officials alike have confidence that NDSU will play an active role in Fargo’s growth throughout the coming decades.
